A Vlora DMO project concept

Safe Heritage Albania

A collaborative network for visitor safety and heritage-site preparedness.

A future practical platform for the people who care for Albania’s heritage places: sharing evidence, building preparedness and advocating for thoughtful public investment.

Why it matters

Protect the place. Prepare the people.

Heritage protection and visitor safety belong together. Paths, stairs, exits, fire readiness, information and emergency preparation must all be considered with respect for each site’s historic character.

Safe Heritage Albania is designed as a network and capacity-building initiative—not a construction programme. It will turn site knowledge into practical recommendations for responsible future investment.

The proposed network

Five sites. One shared method.

01

Butrint

Archaeological landscape

02

Gjirokastër Castle

Historic fortress

03

Apollonia

04

Kaninë Castle

05

Who will connect

Practitioners at the centre.

The network will bring together the people closest to day-to-day heritage care and visitor experience.

What the project will build

Tools for better decisions.

01

Shared reviews

Participatory site visits using a common, heritage-sensitive checklist.

02

Practical training

Training on circulation, falls, fire readiness, evacuation, accessibility and incident recording.

03

Preparedness exercise

One heritage-sensitive emergency simulation to test coordination in practice.

04

Public roadmap

A bilingual toolkit and recommendations for responsible, separately financed site improvements.

A future resource

Designed to remain useful after the project.

If funded, this page will become a public home for non-sensitive resources, meeting updates, shared tools and the network’s public recommendations. Site-specific vulnerabilities will remain confidential and handled responsibly.
